Divorced women often end up feeling financially stuck. And let me tell you from personal experience, it really sucks! So if you’ve ever lived check to check, if you have freaked out because your credit cards are maxed and your car is on the verge of breaking down and what if you need to cough up a doctor co-pay for your kid but you’re still a few days away from getting the next check from your ex, then read on!

But I’m not here to wallow in the doom and gloom. I’m here to offer solutions so that you can stop surviving and start living!

If you’re like me, divorce is not just about having to give up designer shoes, family vacations or your luxury SUV — although those are sometimes the first things that you might miss. When it really hits is when you don’t have anything extra to pay for your kids’ after-school activities and summer camp, or even worse when your medical care starts to suffer. That is the point when I decided that there had to be a better way!

If you’re thinking, “I have been looking all over for work and no one will hire me,” or “I’d like to start a business but I have NO money and I am seriously SO super stressed out about it.” I’m here to tell you that it won’t be easy, but it can be done.

I’m sharing this with you because I have spent the last decade finding ways to earn money through online businesses that are alternatives to a 9-5 job. I believe that for us divorced women, money problems cause the most stress. The good news is those money problems are the easiest problems to solve. Really! Even if you can’t see it now, money is all over the place and you just need to know how to get at it.

You may be shaking your head, but read on because I’m going to share my favorite money solutions that can get you to earn good money, and do it on your own! It’s not easy but it’s SO worth it when you are able to start saying, “Yes” to even the extra fun things in life, because you’ve made it on your own!

Different things work for different people so I have chosen 3 of the best alternative ways that work well for women to earn money while balancing raising children, and even personal life, after divorce.

  1. RUN AN ONLINE STORE. Do you have a product that you always wanted to sell? The good news is you can sell your own unique product, or someone else’s products — even through Facebook! Selling online has never been easier, faster, or more scalable. Shopify is the leading e-commerce platform chosen by today’s entrepreneurs. You can actually open a Shopify store in a matter of hours. Does the thought of learning new technology terrify you? Don’t worry. If you are not tech savvy, you can find a virtual assistant to help you set this up in no time. Shopify plans start at $29/month, with a 14-day free trial so that you can experiment and see if it’s for you. Shopify, a Canadian-based company, offers lots of tutorials and support for its entrepreneurs so you can rest assured that you’ll get the help that you need.
  2. TEACH AN ONLINE CLASS What are you good at that other people wish they knew how to do? Do you bake a beautiful cake? Are you a yoga and meditation instructor? Do you know things about a certain niche or business that other people don’t? Everything is teachable and creating online classes are actually pretty straightforward and easy with teachable, where you can have a beautiful course website, share your knowledge, and be rewarded for it. Like Shopify, teachable gives you a free trial and plans start at $29. My favorite part is teachable’s affiliate program, which means that you can easily pay out a commission when other people share your course with their friends. And so on, and so on… If online teaching sounds interesting to you, but you don’t know where to start, don’t worry. Teachable offers lots of training like this free Master Class and their Weekly 7 Steps Webinar to get you up and running in no time, and teaching like a pro! I dove in with a totally amateur video course on how to recruit for direct sales and I earned close to $500 in my first month with only a minor bit of free promotion through a local moms Facebook group.
  3. BLOG If I had a quarter for every time someone asks me how I make money from my blog. Well, actually I get about $79 every time someone asks me that question because I practice what I preach. Let me explain: Affiliate marketing is a great way to monetize your blog. You get paid to share products you love with your online peeps! How great is that? Plus it doesn’t cost the reader anything extra and you can also use affiliate marketing on your social media — for example, I make money from Pinterest. Does this sound amazing, but you really have no idea what I am talking about? Don’t worry, this concept was totally new to me too, until I took this online class by Michelle Schroder-Gardner of Making Sense of Cents. I had been reading Michelle’s blog for years and I was super inspired by her income reports. Like this one where she made over $72,000 in one month My traffic was still teeny tiny, but I still got my first affiliate sale within one week of starting Michelle’s course! But because you never need to do it on your own, the value of the course goes above and beyond the lessons. My favorite benefit of the course is Michelle’s private Facebook group where you get direct access to Michelle — she even replied directly to my questions when I was just starting out.

About the author
Hi, I’m Diane Prince. I’m a serial entrepreneur, speaker, and single mom to three powerful young women. By day you can find me helping early-stage companies build their revenue through sales. And by night and weekend, I’m working to teach women money making strategies that can pave their way to personal and financial freedom. My first entrepreneurial venture kicked off at age 27 when I founded a temp staffing agency with my then husband. We grew the business to $50 million in revenue before selling it to a publicly traded company. By age 33 I found myself in the midst of success most never imagine, living in Malibu, and enjoying a luxurious life. Soon after the sale of our company, however, my husband and I divorced. During that time, I took control of the second business we’d built together. I was able to generate another successful exit and felt confident I could do it a third time. I decided to take a new risk and found Winnie & Kat, a women’s clothing brand which, similar to Stella & Dot, gave women the chance to run their own businesses and generate flexible income. Despite my passion, the company ultimately failed and the risk I’d taken had left me filing for bankruptcy. My life had been turned upside down. Everything I’d once had was now gone - my husband, businesses, Malibu home, social circle, and lifestyle. I doubted that I could ever make money again and feared that I would be stuck in this new life like so many of the women I’d begun to meet whose stories were not so dissimilar from mine. I knew I wanted to be a better example for my daughters and show them that being a single mom did not mean that I had to be broke. So, I leaned into my natural resourcefulness and committed to finding ways not just to save, but to make really good money. I taught myself how to earn income from affiliate marketing and blogging and even became a top recruiter for a direct sales company. By challenging myself to think differently I discovered that there are endless opportunities to pave your own way, earn a great income, and live your best life. Today, I can proudly say that I’ve worked my way back, this time on my own, and live once again in Malibu. This personal experience has taught me that it’s not only possible to reinvent yourself but that “losing it all” can really be an exciting opportunity to create a new and exciting life. Many of the women who I’ve met on my journey have asked me to teach them what I’ve learned. Their requests and the stories shared by so many others have fueled my mission to change the narrative for single mothers. I hope to use my platform to help other women find their own ways to do bold things and live life to their fullest potential.
